The Mastermind game is an unsigned ActiveX Control. It was written in the late 1980's, and I later converted it for ActiveX. I have temporarily misplaced the source code.

After following the steps below, Microsoft told me it had determined that this ActiveX control with "unknown publisher" was unsafe. Never mind that I wrote this myself, and know that it's safe! The only way around this is to make pointandclicksoftware.com a trusted site. (Tools >> Internet Options >> Security tab >> Click on Green Trusted Sites Circle >> Click on Gray Sites Button >> Enter Https://www.pointandclicksoftware.com ) Sorry about that. It's a great game, but it's your security, and I realize that it's a lot to ask of people just to play a game.

Internet Explorer comes set up to block downloading of unsigned ActiveX Controls. Here is how to download the game:

  • From your browser's menu bar, choose Tools > Internet Options...

  • Click on the Security Settings tab

  • Click on the Internet Zone (the globe) as the Zone you would like to modify

  • Click on the "Custom Level..." button

  • Look for the Category called "ActiveX controls and plugins." Find the section called "Download unsigned ActiveX Controls." If the radio button is checked for "Disable", then change it to "Prompt". Next, look for the section titled "Run ActiveX controls and plugins." If the radio button is marked "Disable," then change it to "Enable." You may need to set "Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to "Enable" as well.
Your system will now prompt you to download the unsigned ActiveX Controls. When you click on the link to launch the Mastermind game, choose "Yes" when asked if you would like to download the unsigned control.
