Website Security is the combination of a number of factors, including physical and virtual security policies.
Physical Security controls the physical access to the building and rooms in which the web servers are housed. All of Point & Click Software's web servers are protected in a building to which only authorized personnel have access. The premises are staffed with security guards that are on duty 24/7, and, in addition, are protected with video surveillance cameras and infrared motion detectors.
Virtual Security is the protection of a company's computer data from unauthorized access. There are two important parts of virtual security:
External Virtual Security involves protection of the entire network, to which the web servers are attached, with appropriate firewalls, and the closing of all security holes in software and operating systems which would allow intrusion by a hacker. Companies must pay attention to security bulletins, when released by operating system vendors, and immediately apply the recommended patches. All of PCSI's websites are protected in this manner.
Internal Virtual Security involves protection of a company's computer data from the inside. Many companies are sorely lacking in this area! Employees should be allowed access to only those areas which are necessary to perform their job functions. Furthermore, when an employee leaves the company, either voluntarily or involuntarily, his or her account should be immediately deactivated. We wish we had $5 for every "disgruntled employee" malicious hacking story we've read, because then we'd be rich! PCSI employs tight internal security.
Internal virtual security also dictates what risky behaviors should be avoided by a web hosting company's staff when reading email, surfing the web, and downloading files from FTP sites. It is a fact, sadly, that despite how many firewalls a company has, one employee can jeopardize the entire operation by downloading a virus or worm through careless actions while using the Internet. Our staff are trained to avoid risky behaviors which could bring in viruses or open up holes into the network.
Make sure the ISP you select has appropriate security to physically and virtually protect your company's sensitive data.
